This vintage Japanese haori jacket, circa 1940s-1960s, is a distinctive example of artisanal shibori dyeing, with tie-dye effects created through classic shibori resist-dyeing methods. Large, abstracted floral medallions, known as hanamon, define the purple floral design, outlined by irregular crackled lines that create textured contrast against the lighter taupe background. The expressive motifs and palette lend the jacket a striking mid-century aesthetic. Loose sleeves and deep, swinging furi sleeves reflect the character of traditional Japanese outerwear, while the silk drapes gracefully as an open layer. Inside, a bold orange-and-cream grid reveals the art of haori linings: the exterior is intentionally more subdued, while vibrant patterns are concealed within, meant to be glimpsed when putting the jacket on or taking it off. Style it with refined pieces from Issey Miyake, Comme des Garçons, Dries Van Noten, Yohji Yamamoto, or The Row.
