Handmade Traditional Japanese Royal Blue Silk Mid-Length Haori Vintage Kimono
This handmade traditional Japanese haori, dating from circa 1940s–1960s, is crafted in rich royal-blue silk with a graceful mid-length silhouette. Its “haura,” or hidden lining, reveals a contrasting silk landscape when the jacket is removed or shifts with the wearer. The lining features floral prints and geometric weaves, in contrasting orange and yellow hues, brought to life with traditional hand-painted dyeing methods. The back features long, sword-like green leaves and deep-purple blossoms rise upward: these shobu, or Japanese irises, are associated with strength, protection, and overcoming misfortune. At their base, clusters of orange and golden-yellow blossoms resemble nadeshiko, or fringed pinks, symbols of gentle grace, enduring beauty, and elegance. The flowers sit within a softly rounded cream-colored scene suggesting flowing stream water and low-lying mist. Style this distinctive vintage piece with tailored trousers, a simple dress, or designer accessories such as a Hermès belt, Chanel handbag, Gucci loafers, or Issey Miyake pleated separates.
